In the American west of the 1870s, outlaws led by Link and Gauche rob a train to get its shipment of gold bullion. Aboard the train is the Ambassador of Japan, travelling to Washington to present a ceremonial sword to the president. The outlaws take this sword as well, shooting one of the Ambassador's two bodyguards and failing to shoot Kuroda only because the Ambassador restrains him. As they make their escape they also attack and abandon one of their own, Link Stuart.
The Ambassador directs his bodyguard, a samurai named Kuroda Jubie, to recover the sword. Kuroda forms an uneasy truce with Link, who has his own reasons to pursue the gang. Lacking horses, they set off on foot. Through many travails and encounters with some interesting characters, they gradually come to respect and trust each other.
In addition to their cultural differences, Link and Kuroda are at odds because of conflicting goals. Link knows Kuroda will kill Gauche if he can; but Link wants the stolen gold, and he needs Gauche alive to find it.
The two male leads, both experienced and competent actors, make a great team with their contrasting styles. Also present are two of the loveliest actresses of the late twentieth century, Ursula Andress and Capucine. Alain Delon makes a convincingly despicable villain, Andress is endearingly treacherous, and the rest of the cast hold up their end well.
The movie was filmed in Spain. This apparently is the reason some of the less prominent members of the cast are billed under names other than their own — either anglicized or completely changed.
My Rating:
8 out of 10
Capsule review: Red Sun is well-plotted and well-acted, with plenty of plausible jeopardy for the main characters. Add in the gorgeous exterior scenes, inventive action sequences, and the novelty of this meeting of warriors from east and west,1 and you have a truly entertaining classic.
