In a real knuckle-biter effort, SG-1 has previously eradicated the ORI from the galaxy they ruled — they think. However, not having gotten there themselves, SG-1 do not know that for sure. Now, ships of the ORI fleet are mounting an attack on Earth — which can hold out for a limited time. Their only hope seems to be finding The Ark of Truth — wherever and whatever that may be. Ancient writings suggest it may somehow "deprogram" the Priors of the ORI, who still retain their powers.
Finally, Daniel Jackson deciphers an inscription telling him the Ancients left it in the ORI galaxy. There is nothing for it but to go there. A mission using the Odyssey is authorized by General Landry over strong objections from the International Oversight Committee (IOC) which wants the battleship here to defend Earth. The ship is dispatched with an IOC agent aboard to provide "oversight."
Im the ORI galaxy, they learn the ORI have been destroyed. But finding the Ark will be difficult. A former soldier of the ORI who rebelled is their one advantage; he makes contact with others of the underground, who lead them to a sacred site where the Ark might be.
Meanwhile, the rogue IOC agent aboard Odyssey goes rogue and activates the Asgard core, which reveals the ship's location. Soon they are under attack by ORI ships and forced to go into hyperspace to avoid the pounding. But the agent says he has the answer to that: a replicator. Of course it gets loose, replicates, and starts to take over the Odyssey. Some knock-down, drag-out fights ensue.
Down on the surface, the SG-1 team are making progress when they are ambushed by ORI troops. Teal'C is shot in the back and left for dead; the others are taken to the ORI stronghold and tortured by Priors. After a time, Teal'C recovers enough to get to his feet. He sets off toward the ORI stronghold — a long journey on foot. When he collapses, Oma Desala heals him so that he can carry on. Finally, despite the presence of Adria, who has inherited the powers of the ORI, SG-1 succeeds in activating the Ark. The result is all they hoped for: Priors exposed instantly repent. But Adria's power is only diminished, not removed. That's when the cavalry rides over the hill, so to speak.
This is an admirable effort in almost all respects. The special effects are up to par, and the actors do their usual competent job.
The one thing wrong with this film is that it overdoes the fight between a "replicated" IOC agent and Col. Mitchell. He's proven he's a tough guy, but no human could take such a beating and remain functional. Also, the amount of blasting away with heavy weapons done by the crew inside Odyssey strains credulity.
So, I'll give this film a rating of 4.0.
My Rating:
8 out of 10
Capsule review: Although some of the fight scenes are overdone, the acting is competent, the effects are well done, and this film certainly has enough action and jeopardy to be worth watching.
