Andre Norton was an American science fiction and fantasy author (with some works of historical fiction and contemporary fiction) under the noms de plume Andre Norton, Andrew North and Allen Weston. She published her first novel in 1934, and was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master Award from the World Science Fiction Society, in 1977. She also won the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) association in 1983.
She was one of the most prolific authors in either genre, with at least 178 novels to her credit. Most have been republished numerous times; the list presented here does not reflect these multiple reprints. Perhaps only Robert Silverberg can claim a higher tally of novels. Norton was also a prolific writer of short stories, and has one volume of poetry to her credit. Of her prodigious ouvre, C. J. Cherryh — no slacker herself, with 67 or more novels — said, "I've seen a complete collection of Andre Norton's books and it haunts me to this day, sort of like the sight of an unscalable Everest."
The Cold War is a common theme in her science fiction, most notably in the Time Traders series. She also frequently portrays post-apocalyptic worlds, as in her early novel Star Man's Son (also published as Daybreak: 2250 A.D.). Her fantasy works generally fall into the "sword and sorcery" sub-genre, with women wielding the magic and men the swords and other material armament. Witch World and its sequels follow this pattern, although male members of the leading family have the spellgift as well.
In both her science fiction and fantasy, a great deal of the action takes place out of doors, and the protagonists typically must traverse rugged country as well as overcome the machinations of enemies. Often, feudal or primitive cultures are treated sympathetically. For example: Time Traders takes place largely in prehistoric Britain, where the Western agents must blend in as Beaker traders; and in The Defiant Agents (set in the same universe, but featuring space travel rather than time travel), agents imprinted with Apache personas must vie with Greater Russia's proxies programmed as Mongols for control of an alien desert planet. One thing that every Andre Norton tale has is a coherent and action-packed plot.

Note: Right now there is information missing from this list (primarily the ISBNs or, for older works, ASINs). I have higher priorities at the moment. Also, this list does not include Norton's short-story collections (12) or omnibus novel collections (2). For additional details, see:
